Olympic Spirit

When creating February culinary offer we were inspired by the cities, former hosts of Winter Olympic Games, where Slovenian athletes won Olympic medals. To keep you occupied while enjoying City Olympic snacks, we want to share memories on some of these accomplishments.

SARAJEVO – 1984
The first ever medal for Slovenia and Yugoslavia was won by the alpine skier Jure Franko who, after a great second run, won silver medal in giant slalom.  Among the former Yugoslavia nations he triggered a blast of excitement and saying: “Volimo Jureka više od bureka!”; (eng: “We love Jure more than burek- extremely popular Balkan dish!”). Commemorate these times with our homemade “burek” pastry pie.

SALT LAKE CITY - 2002
The only medal for Slovenia in Salt Lake City was won by ski jumpers, Damjan Fras, Robert Kranjec, Primož Peterka, Peter Žonta. They were third on the team large hill competition.

VANCOUVER – 2010
Slovenes most likely remember Vancouver Olympic Games by the incredible cross-country skier Petra Majdič. She fell and got injured during the morning warm up for classic sprint. Despite a serious injury, she still showed up at the start and  sprinted all the way to the third place. On top of that, alpine skier Tina Maze won two silver medals (giant slalom and super-G).

SOCHI – 2014
On the last Winter Olympic Games Slovenia won eight medals. This was a great accomplishment which put us on the second place, just behind Norway, looking at medals per million inhabitants. Tina Maze again won two medals: this time both of them gold (downhill and giant slalom). Two medals were also won by ski jumper Peter Prevc (silver on small hill and bronze on big hill) and snowboarder Žan Košir (silver in parallel slalom and bronze in parallel giant slalom). Bronze medal was won by Vesna Fabjan in cross-country sprint and Teja Gregorin in pursuit racing of biathlon.

PYEONGCHANG – 2018
In City Hotel Ljubljana we are already eagerly waiting to follow the 23th Winter Olympic Games (9th-25th of February). We are inviting you to follow the success of Slovenia and, also, of your own country with us.

*** Additionally to the above mentioned cities by which we named our Winning Olympic snacks, Slovenian athletes won medal at the Winter Olympic Games in CALGARY (1988) and LILLEHAMMER (1994).
